Understanding Eating Disorders: What is an Eating Disorder
Eating disorders are very common among the teens. Teens facing eating disorders often tend to put on weight all of a sudden. They often tend to skip their meal and they tend to vomit if they eat anything.
They even feel sick if they try eating more then usual. Teens suffering from eating disorders feel exhausted, fatigued and irritable. They fall sick and suffer terribly from stomach cramps.
Weight obsession is a serious problem for the eating disorders and millions of teens suffer this especially girls. Out of every seven women are struggling from eating disorder at any given time. According to a survey by Youth Risk in 2003, 36% of the teen girls were overweight while 59% of them were trying to loose weight. More than 90% of the teenage girls have an eating disorder.
What is an Eating Disorder:
Eating disorder involve extreme disturbances in ones eating behavior. Anorexia Nervosa and Bulmia Nervosa are types of eating disorders. A teen suffering with Anorexia cannot maintain a constant body weight. A teen suffering from Bulmia binges on food repeatedly followed by vomiting or uses laxatives to remove the food.
One in every hundred women suffer from Anorexia, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Teens suffering from this either gain weight or they are at least they loose 15% below their ideal body weight. Bulimia starts in the late teens and early adulthood and most of the women in America are bulimic.
What causes Eating Disorders in Teens:
There are no particular causes for eating disorders. This disorder can be caused due to many factors such as genetics, psychological problems and family relationships. A teen suffering from eating disorder may have a low self-esteem.
Symptoms of Eating Disorders:
Teens suffering from eating disorder has a distorted body image and they skip their meals often.
They have unusual eating habits because they either eat more than required or they skip their meal.
They also suffer problems like insomnia, constipation, extreme weight change, loss of hair, dental cavities, they become hyper active and gain high interest in exercise.
